We left Johannesburg for a month and embarked on a roadtrip around South Africa to explore the most beautiful places the country has to offer. If you are looking for luxury South African lodges or an exclusive stay for a romantic weekend getaway,  this article is for you. Here are 7 lodges and camps you should visit in 2022, all tried, tested and approved by Kamaroutes.

The Ultimate Romantic escape at Laluka Safari Lodge – This exclusive big 5 game lodge located in the Welgevonden game reserve in Limpopo, is undeniably our most romantic place to visit in 2022. The abundance of wildlife, the well-designed bungalows with private plunge pools and the warm welcome of Didier, Giulia, Simon and their staff will make your stay at Laluka magical. The lodge has 6 uniquely decorated suites, with outside showers and patios that invite you to relax and forget about the outside world. Upon arrival, Didier and his team will show you around and you will visit the farm where all the meals of the lodge are produced from.

Off the beaten tracks at Abelana Game Reserve– Located in the beautiful game reserve of Abelana near the great Kruger National Park, this stylish, newly rebuilt 20-room lodge offers spectacular views over the Selati River. the Abelana River Lodge is the definition of an escape to nature and is home to a plethora of wildlife such as hippos and crocodiles and a variety of bird species. All rooms are under thatch with en-suite facilities, including an additional outside shower and spacious deck overlooking the river where guests can spend time relaxing between activities

Find peace and tranquility at Wildehondekloof – Experience the true spirit of the Karoo in this private reserve in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape. All 9 rooms provide a view of the mountain and river and the Presidential suite has a fireplace we really enjoyed seating around during our stay. There are numerous walking trails crossing the property and the hearty, homemade meals will make you come back for more! This luxury Oudtshoorn accommodation is the ideal spot for or guests who wish to relax and get closer to nature.

Tents and so much more at Falaza Game park and spa– This family-friendly game reserve has been one of Kamaroutes’ favourites for the past 5 years. Falaza is located near Hluhluwe and offers safari experiences to children and adults alike without breaking the bank. The lodge has 15 rooms, with 7 of them having both indoors and out-door showers and baths to really bring out the safari elegance and experience. They offer activities such as boat cruises, game drives, safari walks and even night drives .

For a budget getaway, opt for Tshukudu Game Lodge in Hoedspruit – Tshukudu has 18 elegantly decorated rooms with en-suites and two of the rooms are wheelchair accessible. Clients love the resident cheetahs and relaxed atmosphere and the fact that children are happily catered for at the lodge. Activities on offer  include guided game drives, bush walks, boat cruises on the Blyde River Dam and other additional activities on request.

Classic luxury at Modilto River Lodge – Luxury combined with the authentic feel of the wilderness is what is offered at Moditlo. Guests can experience majestic wildlife on the game drives, enjoy hot air ballooning, visit the nearby rehabilitation centre or choose to explore the Panorama route during their stay at Moditlo. The accommodation is simple yet elegant and there is a pool overlooking the riverbed where guests can relax during the day.

The one that stole our heart: Thabamati Tented Camp in Timbavati – Timbavati is undoubtedly one of the best private game reserves in South Africa and just like wine, it gets even better with time. Timbavati lodges and camps have that “je ne sais quoi” that makes them stand out above the rest and Thabamati is no exception. This beautiful, 4 bedroomed Kruger luxury camp is one the reserve’s newest addition and I recommend it for couples or small groups  looking for intimacy, luxury and plenty of wildlife. Thabamati is situated along a dam and built in such a way that each safari tent has a view of the water below and mountain range beyond.
