Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Antananarivo

Welcome to Madagascar! Your western adventure begins as you arrive at Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo. You will be greeted by your guide and transferred to your comfortable hotel in the heart of the capital city.

After the long international flight, take time to settle in and rest. If you are feeling energetic, take a short walk around your hotel's neighborhood to get your first taste of Malagasy life. The sights, sounds, and scents of Tana will begin to awaken your senses to the adventures that lie ahead.

This evening, relax and prepare yourself mentally for the incredible journey through western Madagascar—a region of dramatic contrasts, ancient baobabs, and geological marvels that will unfold over the coming days.

Day 2 - Discovering Antananarivo

Today you will explore the cultural and historical treasures of Madagascar's capital. Begin with a visit to the Rova, the royal palace complex that crowns the highest hill in the city. This historic site served as the residence of Merina monarchs and offers fascinating insights into Madagascar's royal heritage, as well as sweeping panoramic views across the sprawling city below.

Continue to the Photography Museum, home to an extensive collection of historical photographs documenting Madagascar's rich cultural tapestry, traditions, and evolution through time. These captivating images provide context for understanding the diverse peoples and customs you will encounter on your journey west.

End your city tour at the vibrant Analakely market, the commercial heart of Antananarivo. This bustling marketplace is a sensory feast where you can browse colorful textiles, aromatic spices, fresh tropical produce, traditional handicrafts, and herbal remedies. It is an excellent opportunity to interact with locals and perhaps pick up some snacks or small souvenirs for your journey.

Market Tips: Analakely market is best visited in the morning when it is most active. Practice your bargaining skills and keep your belongings secure in the crowds. Try some fresh tropical fruits like lychees or mangoes from the vendors!

Day 3 - Antananarivo to Antsirabe via Ambatolampy

After breakfast, depart Antananarivo and head south toward Antsirabe, approximately 170 km away (4 hours). The journey takes you through Madagascar's scenic central highlands, passing terraced rice paddies that cascade down hillsides, traditional brick houses, and pastoral villages where life moves at a gentler pace.

Make a fascinating stop in Ambatolampy, a small town renowned for its aluminum pot foundries. Here, skilled artisans have perfected the craft of transforming recycled aluminum into beautiful cookware using traditional casting methods. Watch as they pour molten metal into sand molds and hammer the cooled pots into shape—a time-honored technique passed down through generations. These handcrafted pots are used throughout Madagascar and make unique souvenirs.

Continue to Antsirabe, Madagascar's third-largest city and a charming highland town known for its colonial architecture, thermal springs, and pleasant climate. The city's name means "place of much salt," referring to the natural salt springs that first attracted settlers. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and spend the afternoon exploring this delightful town.

Antsirabe is famous for its colorful pousse-pousse (bicycle rickshaws) which serve as the main form of local transport. Take a pousse-pousse ride through the tree-lined streets to see colonial buildings, visit local craft workshops, or simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this highland gem.

Local Experience: Antsirabe is known for its gemstone workshops where you can see artisans cutting and polishing Madagascar's famous semi-precious stones. It is also home to several breweries producing THB (Three Horses Beer), Madagascar's favorite beer!

Day 4 - Antsirabe to Miandrivazo - Gateway to the West

Today marks your transition from the green highlands to the drier western regions of Madagascar. After breakfast, embark on a long but scenic drive to Miandrivazo (approximately 220 km, 6 hours), the gateway town for the legendary Tsiribihina River descent.

The route takes you through dramatically changing landscapes. Watch as the lush highlands gradually give way to rolling hills, then to increasingly arid terrain as you descend toward the west. You will pass through terraced rice paddies, small market towns, and traditional villages of the Merina people in the highlands, transitioning to Sakalava villages as you approach the western regions.

The scenery becomes more rugged and the vegetation sparser, with baobabs beginning to appear on the horizon—your first glimpse of western Madagascar's iconic trees. The road conditions vary from paved highways to rougher sections, but the changing landscapes provide constant visual interest.

Arrive in Miandrivazo, a frontier town on the banks of the Tsiribihina River. This small, laid-back town serves as the launching point for river expeditions. Check into your accommodation and prepare for tomorrow's adventure. Your guide will brief you on what to expect during the river journey and help you organize your gear.

Preparation Note: Tonight, pack a small bag with essentials for the 2-day river journey. You will need lightweight clothing, swimwear, sun protection, insect repellent, and basic toiletries. Main luggage will be transported separately to meet you in Bekopaka.

Day 5 - Tsiribihina River Descent

Today begins one of Madagascar's greatest adventures! After an early breakfast, transfer by vehicle to Masiakampy (approximately 35 km), where your river journey begins. Board your traditional chaland (flat-bottomed boat) or pirogue, and set off down the magnificent Tsiribihina River.

The Tsiribihina River descent is a legendary experience that takes you through some of Madagascar's most pristine and remote wilderness. As you glide along the river, the landscape unfolds in a spectacular panorama of towering limestone cliffs, dense riparian forests, and wide sandy banks. The river winds through territories rarely visited by outsiders, offering a glimpse of Madagascar as it has existed for centuries.

Throughout the day, you'll encounter incredible wildlife. Watch for Nile crocodiles basking on sandbanks, troops of brown lemurs moving through riverside trees, and an extraordinary variety of birds including kingfishers, herons, egrets, and the magnificent fish eagle. Keep your eyes peeled for chameleons in the vegetation and perhaps even a Madagascar flying fox roosting in the trees.

Stop at villages along the riverbank to meet local Sakalava people who live in near-total isolation. These communities maintain traditional lifestyles, with fishing and agriculture as their primary activities. Children will often run to the riverbank to wave and greet passing boats—a heartwarming glimpse of life in remote Madagascar.

Visit spectacular waterfalls where you can take refreshing swims in natural pools. The most famous is the Anosiampela waterfall, cascading into a pristine pool surrounded by lush vegetation—perfect for cooling off from the day's heat.

As evening approaches, your boat crew will set up camp on a sandy riverbank. Your campsite will be simple but comfortable, with tents provided and a campfire for cooking. Enjoy a freshly prepared dinner under a spectacular canopy of stars, far from any artificial light. The sounds of the African night—frogs, insects, and the gentle flow of the river—create an unforgettable atmosphere.

River Adventure: The Tsiribihina descent is one of Madagascar's iconic experiences. Days are spent peacefully drifting downriver with time for swimming, birdwatching, and village visits. Nights are spent camping on pristine sandbars under brilliant stars. It's rustic but incredibly rewarding.

Day 6 - Tsiribihina to Bekopaka

Wake up to the sounds of the river and enjoy breakfast by the campsite. Continue your river journey to Belo sur Tsiribihina, a small village marking the end of your river adventure. Along the way, enjoy more opportunities for wildlife spotting and perhaps a final swim in the river.

Arrive at Belo sur Tsiribihina around midday, where your 4x4 vehicle will be waiting. After saying goodbye to your river crew, begin the overland journey to Bekopaka (approximately 100 km, 6 hours). Don't let the relatively short distance fool you—this is one of Madagascar's most challenging roads, consisting entirely of rough dirt tracks that can be dusty in dry season or muddy during rains.

The route takes you through spectacular scenery transitioning from the river valley into more rugged terrain. You will pass through remote Sakalava villages where traditional thatched houses dot the landscape and zebu cattle graze freely. The slow pace of the journey allows you to observe rural life up close—women carrying water, children tending animals, and farmers working their fields using methods unchanged for generations.

Cross several small rivers by ferry or ford, adding to the adventurous character of the journey. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you approach the Tsingy region, with limestone outcrops beginning to appear on the horizon.

Arrive in Bekopaka in the late afternoon or early evening. This tiny village serves as the gateway to the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. Check into your lodge and rest after two days of adventure. Tomorrow, you will explore one of Madagascar's most extraordinary geological wonders.

Road Challenge: The Belo to Bekopaka route is rough and slow, but it is all part of the adventure. The remote villages and dramatic scenery make the bumpy ride worthwhile. This is authentic off-the-beaten-path travel!

Day 7 - Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park

The word "tsingy" comes from a Malagasy term meaning "where one cannot walk barefoot," and you will immediately understand why. The park features an incredible landscape of razor-sharp limestone pinnacles that have been sculpted over millions of years by erosion. These knife-like formations create a surreal stone forest that stretches to the horizon—one of the planet's most unique geological landscapes.

Your guided trek will take you through both the Petit Tsingy (Small Tsingy) and Grand Tsingy (Large Tsingy). Start with the Petit Tsingy, a smaller formation that serves as an excellent introduction. Navigate through narrow passages between towering limestone walls, climb natural stone stairs, and cross suspended bridges that offer breathtaking views over the tsingy forest.

Continue to the Grand Tsingy, where the formations are even more dramatic and impressive. Here, you will use via ferrata equipment (provided) including harnesses and carabiners to navigate the most challenging sections. Cross suspended rope bridges high above the pinnacles, offering vertiginous views into deep canyons below. Descend into hidden valleys where lush vegetation thrives in the protected microclimates.

The Tsingy is not just a geological wonder—it's also an important biodiversity hotspot. The park harbors unique flora and fauna that have adapted to this harsh limestone environment. Watch for lemurs (including Decken's sifaka and red-fronted brown lemurs) navigating the sharp rocks with remarkable agility. The park is home to over 90 bird species, numerous reptiles including leaf-tailed geckos and chameleons, and even rare species like the Madagascar fish eagle.

Deep within the tsingy formations are extensive cave systems, some accessible to visitors. These caves were formed by underground rivers and contain spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. Your guide will explain the geological processes that created this extraordinary landscape and point out the unique adaptations of plants and animals living here.

Adventure Level: Exploring the Grand Tsingy requires moderate fitness and a head for heights. You'll use harnesses and traverse suspension bridges high above the formations. It is thrilling but safe with proper equipment and experienced guides. The reward is experiencing one of Earth's most unique landscapes!

Day 8 - Bekopaka to Morondava - The Baobab Journey

After breakfast, bid farewell to Bekopaka and begin the long but spectacular journey to Morondava on the west coast (approximately 200 km, 7-8 hours). The entire route is on rough dirt tracks, making this another adventurous day of travel, but the destination is absolutely worth it.

The journey takes you through quintessential western Madagascar landscapes—vast open savannas, scattered villages, and an increasing number of majestic baobabs dotting the horizon. These ancient giants become more numerous as you approach Morondava, creating an almost surreal landscape.

En route, stop to visit some of the region's most famous individual baobabs. First, see the Sacred Baobab (Baobab Sacré), a massive tree estimated to be over 1,000 years old. This particular tree is revered by the local Sakalava people as a place of spiritual significance where traditional ceremonies are sometimes held. Your guide will explain the cultural and spiritual importance of baobabs in Malagasy tradition.

Continue to the Baobabs Amoureux (Baobabs in Love), an iconic sight where two baobabs grow side by side, their trunks appearing to embrace. Local legend tells of two lovers who were transformed into these trees, forever entwined. It is a popular photo stop and a romantic natural monument.

Time your arrival at the Avenue of the Baobabs for late afternoon to witness one of Madagascar's most iconic sights. This famous dirt road is lined with towering Grandidier's baobabs, the largest and most impressive of Madagascar's six endemic baobab species. Some of these giants are over 800 years old and reach heights of 30 meters.

As the sun begins to set, the Avenue transforms into something magical. The ancient trees are silhouetted against a sky painted in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple. The warm light illuminates the massive trunks, creating one of photography's most coveted shots. This sunset is often described as one of the most beautiful sights in all of Africa—a fitting climax to your western Madagascar adventure.

After sunset, continue to Morondava, a coastal town where you will check into your hotel. Enjoy dinner and rest after the long day of travel, but your mind will still be filled with images of those magnificent trees glowing in the golden hour light.

Photography Gold: The Avenue of the Baobabs at sunset is one of the world's most photographed natural scenes. Arrive early to secure a good spot and bring a tripod if you have one. The light changes rapidly, creating different moods every few minutes. It is truly magical.

Day 9 - Flight to Antananarivo & Day at leisure

After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely morning in Morondava. If you are an early riser, consider returning to the Avenue of the Baobabs for sunrise—equally spectacular as sunset but with different lighting and fewer crowds. The morning light bathes the ancient trees in soft golden tones, creating an entirely different atmosphere than the dramatic sunset colors.

Alternatively, explore Morondava itself, a pleasant coastal town with a relaxed atmosphere. Stroll along the beach, visit the local market where fishermen sell their morning catch, or simply relax by the water and reflect on your incredible journey through western Madagascar.

Transfer to Morondava airport for your domestic flight back to Antananarivo. The flight offers aerial views of the western landscapes you have traveled through, providing a different perspective on the baobab forests, tsingy formations, and winding rivers below.

Upon arrival in Tana, transfer to your hotel where the rest of the day is free. You might want to do some last-minute souvenir shopping, revisit any favorite spots in the capital, or simply rest and organize your photos and memories from the adventure.

This is an excellent time to visit craft markets or artisan cooperatives in Antananarivo if you want to purchase high-quality handicrafts, vanilla, spices, or other Malagasy products to bring home.

Day 10 - Departure

Your Western Madagascar adventure comes to an end today. After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Ivato International Airport with plenty of time before your international departure flight.

As you depart, you carry with you incredible memories: the peaceful rhythm of days drifting down the Tsiribihina River, the thrill of traversing the razor-sharp tsingy formations, camping under brilliant stars on remote sandbars, the magnificence of ancient baobabs silhouetted against spectacular sunsets, and encounters with remote communities maintaining traditional ways of life.

This journey through western Madagascar has taken you far from typical tourist routes into wild, authentic landscapes where adventure and wonder await around every bend in the river and every turn in the rough roads. You've experienced Madagascar at its most raw and beautiful.

Veloma Madagascar—until we meet again!

What makes the Tsiribihina River descent special?

The Tsiribihina River descent is one of Madagascar's most iconic adventures and a highlight of this tour. You will spend time peacefully drifting down a pristine river through remote wilderness, passing dramatic limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and isolated villages. Wildlife sightings include crocodiles, lemurs, and numerous bird species. Nights are spent camping on sandbars under spectacular stars with campfires and freshly cooked meals. It is a perfect blend of adventure, nature, and tranquility—offering a glimpse of Madagascar as it has existed for centuries.

What wildlife will I see on this tour?

Wildlife highlights include lemurs (brown lemurs along the river, Decken's sifaka and red-fronted lemurs in the Tsingy), Nile crocodiles basking on riverbanks, numerous bird species including kingfishers, herons, and potentially the rare Madagascar fish eagle. In the Tsingy, watch for chameleons, leaf-tailed geckos, and various endemic reptiles. The river journey offers excellent birdwatching opportunities. While wildlife sightings in nature can never be guaranteed, this itinerary passes through prime habitats with experienced guides to maximize your chances.

What currency should I bring and how much?

The local currency is the Malagasy Ariary (MGA). Bring euros or US dollars which can be exchanged in Antananarivo and larger towns. ATMs exist in cities but are unreliable once you head west—don't count on them after Antsirabe. Credit cards work in larger hotels but are useless in remote areas. Bring sufficient cash for the entire trip: budget €200-300 for meals not included, tips for guides, drivers, and river crew (customary and appreciated), souvenirs, and any additional drinks or snacks. Cash is king in western Madagascar.
