Day 4 - Elephant Sands game reserve
After breakfast, you will pick up your rental car and head straight to Elephant Sands. Nestled amidst the vast and diverse landscapes of Botswana, Elephant Sands Game Reserve offers an unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Strategically positioned between the iconic Makgadikgadi Pans, the Okavango Delta, and Chobe National Park, Elephant Sands serves as an ideal base for exploring the country's natural wonders.
One of the most captivating features of Elephant Sands is its proximity to a natural watering hole. Here, you can witness the majestic elephants come to quench their thirst, often just a few meters away from your lodge. This unique opportunity allows for intimate encounters with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Beyond the elephants, Elephant Sands is home to a variety of other wildlife species. Keep your eyes peeled for giraffes, zebras, impalas, and various bird species that roam freely around the reserve. The lack of fencing ensures an authentic and immersive experience, allowing you to truly connect with the wilderness.
Day 5 - Explore the Makgadikgadi pans
After breakfast, we suggest a stop at the Nata bird sanctuary. Primarily renowned for its thriving population of pink flamingos and its ephemeral lake, the sanctuary is located within the Makgadikgadi salt pans network and is the easiest way to access this fantastic landscape.
In the afternoon you will reach your next accommodation, located on the edge of the Makgadikgadi national park that you will explore the next day.
Day 6 - Safari in the Makgadikgadi national park
Today, you will embark on a half-day safari in the Makgadikgadi National Park, followed by a visit to a local village in the afternoon. Safaris in the Makgadikgadi Pans are unparalleled, with wild, austere, and hypnotic plains, resembling the closest thing on Earth to the rugged surface of the moon. Encounter uniquely adapted wildlife as they expertly navigate the arid desert in search of food and moisture in this seemingly hostile environment. Daytime excursions come across herds of springbok, gemsbok, and red hartebeest, while night drives brush against bold brown hyena clans, bat-eared foxes, and the elusive black-maned Kalahari lion. Open 4x4s perfectly illustrate the raw, fascinating appeal of the desert.
Day 7 - Arrival in Khwai
After transferring to Maun airport and returning your rental car, your driver will take you to the Khwai concession, a hidden gem nestled within the Moremi Game Reserve. Upon arrival, check in to your comfortable lodge and enjoy a delicious breakfast before embarking on a thrilling mokoro safari. Glide through the tranquil waterways , surrounded by papyrus reeds and lush vegetation. Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of wildlife, including hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, and even the occasional elephant. As you explore this serene environment, experience the tranquility and beauty of the African bush.
Day 8 - Safaris in Khwai and Moremi
In the morning, you will leave for a safari in a traditional canoe also called “Mokoro”. Our experienced guides provide you with an intense experience teaching you about the local flora, its medical use, animal tracking, movement and behaviour. The local 'poler' (boatman) will give you an in-depth insight into the fauna of the aquatic world as the Mokoro glides through the tributaries of the Khwai River. The mokoro is ideal as a means of transport in the delta as it can move quietly in the shallow waters, being pushed by the boatman using a long pole, moving along the narrow channels or cutting through the long grass or papyrus.
In the afternoon, after a good lunch, go on a 4x4 safari and get the opportunity to spot a large majority of Africa's big game including the Big Five, hippos, zebras, giraffes, various species of antelope and many more
Day 11 - Arrival in Chief's Island
Start your day with a mokoro safari or 4x4 game drive followed by a hearty breakfast before embarking on a scenic transfer to Chief's Island. Chief's Island is a secluded oasis nestled within the world-renowned Okavango Delta. It is a pristine wetland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which offers a unique and unforgettable safari experience.
Upon arrival, check into your comfortable accommodation, where you'll be surrounded by the tranquility of nature. Relax on the camp's spacious grounds, take a refreshing dip in the pool, or simply enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
After lunch, embark on a thrilling mokoro safari through the waterways of the Okavango Delta. Spot elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a diverse array of bird species as you navigate this pristine ecosystem.
