Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Antananarivo

Welcome to Madagascar! Upon arrival at Ivato International Airport, you will be greeted by your guide and transferred to your hotel in the heart of Antananarivo, affectionately known as "Tana" by locals.

Take the afternoon to rest and acclimatize after your journey. If you are feeling adventurous, take a stroll around the neighborhood to get your first taste of Malagasy life and culture.

Day 2 - Exploring Antananarivo

Today you will discover the historical and cultural treasures of Madagascar's capital. Begin with a visit to the Rova, the former royal palace complex perched atop the city's highest hill, offering panoramic views and fascinating insights into Madagascar's monarchy.

Continue to the Photography Museum, which houses an impressive collection documenting Madagascar's history and traditions through captivating images. End your morning at the bustling Analakely market, where you'll experience the vibrant energy of local commerce and have the opportunity to browse colorful textiles, spices, handicrafts, and fresh produce.

Cultural Insight: The Rova represents the heart of Merina Kingdom heritage and offers a glimpse into Madagascar's fascinating royal history.

Day 3 - Flight to Diego Suarez

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Diego Suarez (approximately 1000 km north). This scenic flight offers aerial views of Madagascar's diverse landscapes as you journey from the highlands to the northern tip of the island.

Upon arrival in Diego Suarez, also known as Antsiranana, you will be transferred to your hotel. Diego is Madagascar's northernmost city, blessed with natural harbors and surrounded by stunning bays. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, perhaps exploring the town center or relaxing by the waterfront.

Day 4 - Excursion to the Three Bays

Today's adventure takes you along one of Madagascar's most scenic coastal routes. You will visit three magnificent bays, each with its own unique character and beauty.

Start at Sakalava Bay, known for its turquoise waters and peaceful atmosphere. Continue to Pigeon Bay (Baie des Pigeons), a secluded cove perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Finally, reach the spectacular Dunes Bay (Baie des Dunes), where golden sand dunes meet the ocean, creating a dramatic landscape reminiscent of a desert by the sea.

Photography Tip: The Three Bays offer incredible photo opportunities, especially during golden hour. Don't forget your camera and swimwear!

Day 5 - Amber Mountain National Park

Today you will explore one of Madagascar's most beautiful national parks, Montagne d'Ambre (Amber Mountain). Located about 40 km south of Diego, this protected rainforest sits at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, creating a cooler, misty climate that supports unique biodiversity.

Hike through lush tropical forest trails where you will have the chance to spot several lemur species, chameleons, geckos, and an incredible variety of endemic birds. The park is also home to stunning waterfalls, including the impressive Cascade Sacrée. Keep your eyes peeled for the Amber Mountain rock thrush and the crowned lemur, both endemic to this region.

Wildlife Watching: Amber Mountain is home to 7 species of lemurs, 75 bird species, and countless chameleons. Your local guide will help you spot and identify the incredible wildlife.

Day 6 - Emerald Sea Adventure

Prepare for one of the highlights of your trip! Today you will journey by traditional pirogue to the enchanting Mer d'Émeraude (Emerald Sea), located north of Diego Bay.

This stunning natural lagoon lives up to its name with shallow, calm waters that shimmer in brilliant shades of emerald green. The lagoon is surrounded by pristine white sand beaches and dramatic sand dunes, creating a paradise-like setting that seems almost unreal.

Spend your day swimming in the warm, crystal-clear waters, snorkelling to discover colourful fish and marine life, or simply relaxing on the deserted beaches. A picnic lunch will be served on the beach, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in this postcard-perfect environment.

Perfect Day: The Emerald Sea offers ideal conditions for swimming and snorkelling. The shallow waters and gentle waves make it perfect for all skill levels.

Day 7 - Diego to Ankarana via Red Tsingy

After breakfast, depart Diego Suarez and head south towards Ankarana (approximately 150 km, 4 hours). Along the way, you'll make an unforgettable stop at the Red Tsingy, a geological marvel that appears almost extraterrestrial.

These striking red rock formations were sculpted over millions of years by erosion, creating a labyrinth of pinnacles, canyons, and caves in brilliant shades of ochre and red. The formations are made of laterite and limestone and are particularly photogenic in the afternoon light. Walk among these natural sculptures and marvel at the power of nature's artistry.

Continue to your accommodation near Ankarana National Park, where you'll settle in for the next two nights.

Unique Geology: The Red Tsingy are a completely different formation from the grey limestone tsingy you will see tomorrow, showcasing Madagascar's incredible geological diversity.

Day 8 - Ankarana National Park

Today is dedicated to exploring the spectacular Ankarana National Park, one of Madagascar's most impressive protected areas. The park is famous for its vast network of razor-sharp limestone pinnacles called "tsingy" – a Malagasy word meaning "where one cannot walk barefoot."

Your guided trek will take you through suspended bridges, narrow passages between towering limestone walls, and into cathedral-like caves adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. The park's underground river system has created an extraordinary landscape both above and below ground.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be thrilled by the opportunity to spot crowned lemurs, Sanford's brown lemurs, and if you are lucky, the rare Perrier's sifaka. The park is also home to fossas (Madagascar's top predator), numerous bat species in the caves, and an incredible variety of reptiles and birds.

Adventure Note: Exploring the tsingy requires moderate fitness and agility. You will navigate narrow paths and use fixed chains in some sections. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential!

Day 9 - Ankarana to Ambanja

After breakfast, continue your journey westward towards Ambanja (approximately 150 km, 4 hours). This scenic drive takes you through rural Madagascar, where you will witness daily life in small villages and the changing landscape from dry savanna to lusher terrain.

Stop in Ambilobe, a bustling market town and regional center. Here you will have the opportunity to observe local commerce and perhaps pick up some souvenirs or snacks from friendly vendors.

As you approach Ambanja, you will cross the Mahavavy River and enter Madagascar's premier cocoa-growing region. Ambanja is often called the "chocolate capital" of Madagascar. The region's rich volcanic soil and favorable climate produce some of the world's finest cocoa beans, which have earned international recognition.

Local Specialty: If time permits, visit a local cocoa plantation to learn about chocolate production and sample some of Madagascar's renowned chocolate.

Day 10 - Journey to Nosy Be via Baobab Forest

Today marks your transition from mainland adventure to island paradise. After breakfast, drive to Ankify (approximately 90 km), stopping en route to visit the magnificent Reniala Reserve with its ancient baobab forest.

Walk among these giants of nature – some over 800 years old – and learn about their cultural significance and unique ecology. The reserve is also home to various lemur species and numerous birds, making it a photographer's dream.

From Ankify port, board your boat for the scenic crossing to Nosy Be. As you approach the island, you will understand why it's called the "Perfume Island" – the air is fragrant with ylang-ylang, vanilla, and other spices that have been cultivated here for generations.

Check into your beachfront accommodation and spend the afternoon at leisure, perhaps taking a sunset stroll along the beach or enjoying a refreshing swim in the Indian Ocean.

Day 11 - Nosy Iranja - Turtle Island

Today's excursion takes you to one of Madagascar's most photographed locations: Nosy Iranja, affectionately nicknamed "Turtle Island." This stunning destination consists of two small islands connected by a pristine white sandbar that stretches for nearly one kilometer.

The phenomenon of the connecting sandbar is truly magical – at low tide, you can walk between the islands on this natural bridge, surrounded by crystalline turquoise waters on both sides. At high tide, the sandbar disappears beneath the waves, separating the islands once more.

The beaches here are postcard-perfect, with powdery white sand and swaying palm trees. Spend your day swimming, snorkeling in the coral-rich waters teeming with tropical fish, or simply relaxing under the shade of a coconut palm. The island is also a nesting site for sea turtles, particularly hawksbill and green turtles (seasonal).

Stay for the sunset – it's absolutely breathtaking and often ranks among travelers' most memorable moments in Madagascar.

Bucket List Moment: The walk across the sandbar with turquoise water on both sides is an iconic Madagascar experience. Time your visit according to tide schedules for the best experience.

Day 12 - Nosy Tanikely & Mont Passot

Begin your day with a boat excursion to Nosy Tanikely, a small marine reserve island that's considered one of the best snorkeling spots in all of Madagascar. The protected waters surrounding this island are incredibly clear and teeming with marine life.

Don your snorkel gear and prepare to be amazed by the underwater world. You'll swim among colorful coral gardens inhabited by hundreds of tropical fish species, sea turtles gracefully gliding through the water, and if you're fortunate, even harmless reef sharks and rays. The marine reserve status ensures healthy coral and abundant fish populations.

After returning to Nosy Be, spend the late afternoon hiking to the summit of Mont Passot, the island's highest point at 329 meters. This sacred volcanic peak offers panoramic 360-degree views of Nosy Be, the surrounding islands, and the mainland in the distance.

Mont Passot is famous for its crater lakes and is particularly spectacular at sunset, when the sky explodes in shades of orange, pink, and purple. The site is also culturally significant to the local Sakalava people, who consider it a sacred place where traditional ceremonies are sometimes held.

Snorkeling Paradise: Nosy Tanikely offers some of the best visibility and marine biodiversity in the region. The gentle currents and shallow areas make it suitable for all experience levels.

Day 13 - Nosy Komba & Nosy Sakatia

Your final island-hopping adventure begins with a visit to Nosy Komba, a volcanic island covered in lush tropical forest. This car-free island maintains a traditional way of life, with small fishing villages connected by forest paths.

Visit the main village of Ampangorina, where local artisans create beautiful handicrafts including embroidered tablecloths, wood carvings, and woven baskets. The island is also famous for its population of friendly black lemurs, which you can observe in their natural habitat in the village's sacred lemur park.

Continue to Nosy Sakatia, a quieter, lesser-visited island that's a haven for sea turtles. The waters around Sakatia offer excellent snorkeling opportunities, with healthy coral reefs and the chance to swim alongside green and hawksbill sea turtles.

Explore the small fishing village and gain insight into the traditional Sakalava lifestyle. The pace of life here is slow and peaceful – a perfect way to conclude your island adventures. Enjoy fresh seafood for lunch, often prepared right on the beach, before returning to Nosy Be.

Cultural Experience: Nosy Komba offers an authentic glimpse into island life. The local community is welcoming, and purchasing handicrafts directly supports village families.

Day 14 - Flight to Antananarivo

After breakfast and perhaps a final morning swim, transfer to Nosy Be airport for your flight back to Antananarivo. As you fly over Madagascar once more, take time to reflect on the incredible diversity of experiences you have had over the past two weeks.

Upon arrival in Tana, you will be transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may have some free time to do last-minute souvenir shopping or revisit a favorite spot in the capital. The evening is at leisure to pack and prepare for your departure.

Day 15 - Departure

Your Madagascar adventure comes to an end today. After breakfast, you will be transferred to Ivato International Airport in time for your international flight home.

Depart with your heart full of memories: the otherworldly tsingy formations, the emerald waters of paradise beaches, the soulful eyes of lemurs, the warmth of Malagasy hospitality, and the untouched beauty of a land like no other.

Veloma Madagascar – until we meet again!

The best time for this Northern Circuit tour is during the dry season from April to November. The peak season is July to September when the weather is most pleasant with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. December to March is the rainy season, which can make some roads challenging, though the landscapes are lush and green. For turtle nesting at Nosy Iranja, visit between November and March.

What fitness level is required for this tour?

This tour requires a moderate fitness level. Most activities involve 2-4 hours of walking per day on uneven terrain. The Ankarana tsingy exploration is the most challenging, requiring agility to navigate narrow passages and use fixed chains. If you can comfortably walk for a few hours and have reasonable mobility, you will be fine. All activities can be adjusted to your comfort level with your guide.

The local currency is the Malagasy Ariary (MGA). We recommend bringing euros or US dollars, which can be exchanged at banks or official exchange offices in major cities. ATMs are available in Antananarivo, Diego Suarez, and Nosy Be, but can be unreliable elsewhere. Credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and some restaurants in cities, but cash is essential for tips, small purchases, and rural areas.
