Explore 6 Countries at Your Own Pace
The Thomas family (now part of our Kamaroutes family) trusted us with their first African adventure – an epic 72-day road trip through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and Lesotho. Wanting to immerse themselves in nature while keeping costs manageable, they chose a self-drive camping trip with guided experiences at key locations.
What made this trip special? The Thomas family loved having the freedom to explore at their own pace without rigid schedules – stopping longer when a place captivated them, or moving on when they felt ready. Waking up to lions roaring in the distance and falling asleep under endless starry skies brought them closer to nature than any hotel ever could. While they cherished the independence of self-driving, they appreciated knowing our local team was just a phone call away if needed, giving them the perfect balance of adventure and peace of mind.

Trip Highlights
Their adventure began in Cape Town (3 nights) exploring the city and peninsula before heading north to Namaqua National Park. In Namibia, they marveled at Fish River Canyon, climbed Sossusvlei’s dunes, tracked desert elephants in Damaraland, visited Epupa Falls, and enjoyed incredible game viewing in Etosha.
Crossing into Botswana, they experienced the Okavango Delta by mokoro, witnessed Chobe’s elephant herds, and stood in awe at Victoria Falls. Before returning to South Africa, they explored the vast Makgadikgadi Pans and remote Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
Back in South Africa, they hiked Blyde River Canyon, spotted the Big Five in Kruger, and learned about Swazi culture during a homestay in Eswatini. The coastal wetlands of iSimangaliso and the mountain landscapes of Royal Natal National Park took their breath away before their final stop in Lesotho‘s highlands. The journey ended with two nights in Johannesburg, including visits to Soweto and the Apartheid Museum.
How we made it easy for them: They traveled in a fully equipped 4×4 with a rooftop tent for those unforgettable bush nights, complete with detailed GPS routes and maps for stress-free navigation. While they loved the independence of self-driving, our local team was available 24/7 for backup—whether for route advice or emergency support. For a mix of comfort and adventure, they alternated between wild campsites and cozy lodges, getting the best of both worlds.
