Travel Itinerary
Day 1 - Welcome to Tanzania
Welcome to Tanzania! Once you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and pass through customs, we'll be there to pick you up and take you to your accommodation in Moshi. You'll then get to meet your climbing guide, who will give you a briefing about the climb and check your gear. You'll spend the night at the resort, ready to start your adventure.
Day 2 - The Hike begins!
Our Kilimanjaro adventure begins after breakfast with a drive from Moshi to Lemosho Gate, the trailhead for the scenic Lemosho Route. This western approach to the mountain starts in the enchanting Afromontane Rainforest, the first of four unique ecological zones we'll encounter. At the gate, we'll meet our support crew and begin our trek at a leisurely pace, eager to spot wildlife along the way. We'll break for lunch on the trail and arrive at Forest Camp by afternoon, ready for a memorable night under the stars.
- Distance: 6km
- Habitat: Montane Forest
- Elevation: 2,360m to 2,895m
Day 3 - Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Prepare for a scenic hike through the unique landscape of Shira 1 Camp, a mix of grassy plains and intriguing rock formations. If the clouds cooperate, we might catch a glimpse of Kibo Peak. Our ascent to Shira 2 will involve some steeper climbs, rewarding us with views of the dramatic Northern Ice Fields and breathtaking panoramas of Kibo from the magnificent Shira Plateau.
- Distance: 8km
- Habitat: Montane Forest/ Moorland
- Elevation: 2,895m to 3,505m
Day 4 - Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
Today's trek showcases a dramatic shift in landscapes, beginning with a climb to panoramic viewpoints. We'll then enter a desert-like zone, scrambling over rocky ridges near glacial formations. Our lunch stop at Lava Tower marks the highest elevation of the day. From there, we'll descend steeply to our campsite, a valley nestled amongst cliffs with far-reaching views over the plains.
- Distance: 8km
- Habitat: Heath/ Alpine Desert
- Elevation: 3,505m to 3,976 m
Day 5 - Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Today presents a significant challenge: descending into the Great Barranco, a formidable gorge, and then ascending the imposing Barranco Wall, a natural barrier separating us from Kibo's southeastern flank. This long and strenuous climb, though not technically difficult, offers stunning views and a sense of accomplishment. We'll pass by the majestic Heim and Kersten glaciers en route to the Karanga Valley, followed by a steep ascent to Karanga Camp (3963m), our overnight destination. An optional acclimatization hike to approximately 4200m is available in the afternoon.
- Distance: 5 km/3 miles
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
- Elevation: 3976 to 3996m
Day 6 - Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Once you finish breakfast, you'll start walking along a path that follows a gully. This path will lead you up to the Barafu camp (4664m) on the west ridge. It's only a 3 km walk, but it's tough, so take it slow. When you get to the camp, it's going to be super cold! You'll have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep before your big summit push in the middle of the night.
At this high elevation, there's not much vegetation, just some White-necked ravens flying around. There's no water for washing up, and no streams above this point. By the time you reach the camp, you'll probably be pretty tired and feeling weak. The crew will have your tent set up and dinner ready for you. Your guide will come by to make sure you have all the right clothes for the summit. They recommend wearing three layers to stay warm - it gets as cold as -10c at night. After dinner, try to get some rest before your big climb. You'll need all the energy you can get for the trek to Uhuru Peak in the middle of the night.
- Distance: 4 kms
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
- Elevation: 3996m to 4673m
Day 7 - You've reached the Summit!
Get ready to leave just before midnight to make your final push to the top of the mountain. It's all about being patient and not giving up as you face the coldest and windiest part of your journey. By the time the sun starts to rise over Tanzania, you'll be near Stella Point, which is about 5685 m high. This is where you'll see the most amazing sunrise ever, with Mawenzi Peak in the background. From Stella Point, it's a short climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa! Don't forget to take lots of pictures! After celebrating at the summit, it's time to make your way back down. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful rainforest views as you head to Mweka Camp before it gets dark. With each step, you'll feel more and more energized thanks to the increasing oxygen levels. Your legs might be tired, but your heart will be light. Get a good night's sleep at Mweka Camp.
- Distance: 14 km
- Habitat: Ice-capped summit
- Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m Ascent
- Elevation: 5,895m to 3,068m Descent
Day 8 - Back to Moshi
Once you finish your breakfast, you'll walk back down through the forest and around lunchtime, you'll say goodbye to your crew. Then, you'll be driven back to your hotel where you can take a nice shower and enjoy a special dinner to celebrate your adventure.
- Distance: 9km
- Habitat: Rain Forest
- Elevation: 3,068m to 1,640m
Day 9 - Goodbye Tanzania!
