Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Cape Town

Sawubona! Welcome to South Africa! Your Garden Route adventure begins as you arrive at Cape Town International Airport, where your driver-guide will greet you and transfer you to your guesthouse in the mother city. This stunning metropolis sits on the shores of Table Bay, dominated by the iconic Table Mountain with its distinctive flat top flanked by Lion's Head and Devil's Peak.

After settling into your accommodation, join your guide for an afternoon ascent of Table Mountain. The rotating cable car whisks you to the 1,085-meter summit in a journey offering breathtaking 360-degree views. The engineering marvel of the cable car has been transporting visitors since 1929, and the rotating floor ensures everyone gets spectacular views during the ascent.

At the summit, you will find yourself on a vast plateau covered in unique fynbos vegetation found nowhere else on Earth. The panoramic views are simply stunning: the Atlantic Ocean stretches to the western horizon and the city sprawls below. Take time to explore the various walking trails, snap photos from different viewpoints, or enjoy a warm beverage at the summit café while soaking in one of nature's greatest shows.

This evening, gather for a welcome dinner, discussing the adventures that await over the coming days.

Meals: Dinner included

Day 2 - Cape Town & Peninsula Tour

After breakfast, embark on one of South Africa's most scenic drives: the full-day Cape Peninsula tour. This spectacular excursion takes you along dramatic coastal roads to the southwestern tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.

Your journey begins along Chapman's Peak Drive. This marvel carved into the mountainside offers jaw-dropping views at every turn—the road clings to cliffs 600 meters above the churning Atlantic, with viewpoints perfect for photographs and watching for whales (June-November season).

Continue to Boulder's Beach to visit the famous African penguin colony. These charismatic endangered birds have made this pristine beach their home, and you can observe them waddling, swimming, and nesting just meters away on boardwalks designed to protect their habitat while allowing close encounters. The sight of penguins on a white-sand beach with crystal-clear water and massive granite boulders creates one of nature's most delightful scenes.

Journey on to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope within Table Mountain National Park. Reach the old lighthouse either by climbing the steep footpath or taking the Flying Dutchman Funicular. From this vantage point 150 years ago, the lighthouse warned ships of the treacherous rocks below. Today, it offers commanding views across False Bay and the endless ocean beyond. Watch for Cape fur seals, dolphins, and whales in the waters below.

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 3 - Day at leisure in Cape Town

Today is yours to explore Cape Town at your own pace, with several fascinating optional activities available to book in advance.

  • Langa Township Tour: Visit Langa, Cape Town's oldest township established in 1927, with Thami—a former street child and ex-prisoner who has transformed his life to become a community guide. This immersive experience goes far beyond typical tourism, offering genuine insights into how most Capetonians actually live. Walk through the neighbourhood with someone who grew up here, visit craft cooperatives and community projects, and understand the township's role in South Africa's complex history. This is an opportunity to move beyond clichés and discover Cape Town through the eyes of its residents and their creative initiatives.
  • San People Experience at !Khwa ttu: Journey to !Khwa ttu, the embassy of the San people. An estimated 130,000 San live across six Southern African countries. The San (Bushmen) are one of the last hunter-gatherer societies surviving on Earth. Their ancestral way of life, languages, and culture are seriously threatened by loss of land rights, climate change impacts, and widespread lack of understanding of their lifestyle. The San story is one many people worldwide may not know, but everyone will recognize its themes. At !Khwa ttu, the San tell this story in their own words through guided walks, cultural demonstrations, and ancient rock art interpretation.

This evening, enjoy another dinner at a local restaurant, perhaps exploring the V&A Waterfront or trying Cape Malay cuisine in the historic Bo-Kaap neighborhood.

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 4 - Another day at leisure in Cape Town

Your second free day in Cape Town offers more opportunities to explore this magnificent city's attractions based on your interests.

  • Robben Island: Take the ferry to this UNESCO World Heritage Site where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. The maximum-security prison held many political prisoners during apartheid, and today, former inmates lead powerful tours sharing firsthand accounts of their experiences. Visit Mandela's tiny cell, see the limestone quarry where prisoners labored, and understand the resilience and hope that characterized the anti-apartheid struggle. This moving experience is essential for understanding South Africa's journey from oppression to democracy. Book well in advance as tours sell out quickly.
  • Two Oceans Aquarium: Located at the V&A Waterfront, this world-class aquarium offers fascinating close-up encounters with marine life from South Africa's two ocean systems—the cold Atlantic and warm Indian Ocean. Discover the incredible range of fish and amazing creatures inhabiting these waters, from playful penguins to graceful rays, from colorful reef fish to predatory sharks. The aquarium's conservation and education programs make this both entertaining and enlightening.
  • Winelands Experience: Discover South Africa's oldest wine estate, Groot Constantia, and savor world-renowned wines in a historic setting dating to 1685. This beautiful estate at the foot of Table Mountain produces exceptional wines and offers cellar tours explaining traditional winemaking methods. For a more comprehensive experience, a half-day or full-day excursion to Franschhoek or Stellenbosch can be arranged, allowing you to explore multiple estates, learn about the Cape's unique terroir, and understand why South African wines have earned international acclaim.

Spend your evening at leisure, perhaps enjoying Cape Town's renowned restaurant scene or taking a sunset stroll along the Atlantic Seaboard.

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 5 - Route 62 & Ostrich Capital

After breakfast, depart Cape Town with your driver-guide for the next chapter of your adventure: Oudtshoorn via the legendary Route 62. This mythical journey stretches over 800 kilometers and is South Africa's answer to America's Route 66, traversing spectacular landscapes from the rugged Drakensberg mountains to the sun-drenched vineyards of the Cape region.

Route 62 winds through some of the country's most dramatic scenery—mountain passes with sweeping vistas, semi-arid valleys dotted with characteristic Karoo vegetation, and charming villages where time seems to move more slowly. Stop at roadside farm stalls selling dried fruit, local preserves, and handcrafted items. Pass through quaint towns like Montagu and Barrydale, each with their own character and stories. The journey itself becomes an attraction, with photo opportunities at every turn and the sense of traveling through authentic South Africa far from typical tourist routes.

Arrive in Oudtshoorn, the largest town in the Little Karoo, a semi-arid mountainous region just inland from the Garden Route. Founded in 1857, Oudtshoorn is often called South Africa's ostrich capital, having experienced two economic booms between 1865 and 1913 in the international feather market. These flightless birds brought great wealth to the region—you will notice the ornate "feather palaces" (Victorian mansions) built by ostrich barons during boom times.

The highlight of your day is visiting a working ostrich farm. Several farms still operate around Oudtshoorn, and if this experience "tempts" you, you'll come face-to-face with the world's largest bird. Ostriches were first farmed in the late 19th century for their dramatic black and white plumes (used in fashion), but today they're valued more for their low-cholesterol meat, soft leather, and enormous eggs. Learn about ostrich biology, behaviour, and farming practices. Watch these powerful birds run (they can reach 70 km/h!), see eggs that weigh 1-2 kilograms, and perhaps even try riding one if you are feeling adventurous.

Optional Activities:

  • Ostrich Farm Visit - Meet the world's largest bird
  • Cango Caves Guided Tour - Explore ancient limestone caves

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 6 - Meerkats & Knysna Lagoon

Rise before dawn for an optional but unforgettable experience: a meerkat encounter at sunrise. In the cool morning light, witness the magical moment when wild meerkats emerge from their burrows. Watch these charismatic "sentinels of the desert" greet the day—standing upright to warm themselves in the first rays of sun, grooming each other, and beginning their daily routines of foraging and sentry duty. Your expert guide will explain meerkat social structure, communication, and survival strategies in their natural Karoo habitat. This privileged encounter with wild animals going about their normal behavior, seemingly unbothered by quiet human observers, creates memories that last a lifetime.

After your meerkat adventure (or a more leisurely breakfast), depart Oudtshoorn and journey toward Knysna, one of the Garden Route's crown jewels. The scenic drive takes you through changing landscapes as you approach the coast.

Arrive in Knysna around midday and immediately understand why travelers fall in love with this charming coastal town. Situated beneath some of South Africa's most densely forested slopes, Knysna overlooks a calm lagoon whose narrow mouth is guarded by a pair of dramatic sandstone cliffs called the Knysna Heads. The town is renowned for its vibrant culinary scene—the local specialty being fresh oysters harvested from the lagoon—and the surrounding coast and forests offer endless opportunities for scenic walks and outdoor activities.

Check into your accommodation and perhaps enjoy lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants, sampling those famous Knysna oysters paired with local wine.

As the sun begins its descent, embark on a sunset cruise across Knysna Lagoon. This romantic and peaceful experience takes you toward the famous Heads—those imposing cliffs guarding the lagoon's entrance to the Indian Ocean. As you sail, sip a glass of wine or champagne and watch the sky transform into brilliant shades of gold, orange, and pink, colors reflecting beautifully on the calm lagoon waters. The cruise offers perfect photo opportunities, chances to spot marine birds, and the simple pleasure of being on the water as day transitions to night. It is the ideal way to welcome yourself to the Garden Route's coastal paradise.

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 7 - Tsitsikamma National Park

After breakfast, depart Knysna and journey east to Tsitsikamma National Park, one of South Africa's most dramatic coastal reserves. The name "Tsitsikamma" comes from the Khoisan language, literally meaning "place of abundant water"—and this is no exaggeration.

This spectacular park protects 80 kilometers of rugged rocky coastline, mountainous hinterland, and remote valleys covered in fynbos and tall temperate forests with deep gorges leading to the sea. The indigenous forests here are ancient and pristine, with massive Yellowwood trees hundreds of years old towering above dense undergrowth of ferns and forest flowers. Numerous rivers carve through the landscape, creating waterfalls and pools before plunging into the ocean.

Check into your accommodation, beautifully situated within the park. The sound of waves crashing against rocks and seabirds calling creates a natural symphony.

Spend the afternoon exploring the park's trails. The Lourie Trail, for example, is a shorter route offering magnificent views over the marine reserve. This path passes beside a waterfall and provides spectacular vistas of the rugged coastline, rocky outcrops, and pristine indigenous forest. Numerous trails wind through the park—from easy coastal walks to more challenging forest hikes—allowing you to discover waterfalls, view the famous suspension bridge spanning the Storms River mouth, and immerse yourself in this pristine wilderness.

For the adventurous, optional activities include kayaking and lilo adventures. The lilo and kayak experience begins with kayaking peacefully on Storms River waters before entering the spectacular gorge on a lilo (inflatable raft). You'll float between towering rock walls in an immersive and playful exploration of the Tsitsikamma's dramatic geography—a unique perspective on this ancient landscape.

Alternatively, experience the forest canopy tour—a zipline adventure through Knysna's ancient indigenous forest. Glide from platform to platform suspended high in the trees, experiencing the millennial forest from a bird's perspective. It's an exhilarating yet safe family-friendly activity that showcases the richness of the local flora while delivering thrills among the treetops.

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 8 - Journey to Addo & Afternoon Safari

After a morning exploring Tsitsikamma's trails and perhaps a final swim or coastal walk, depart for Addo Elephant National Park. This sanctuary was founded in 1931 with an urgent mission: save the region's last eleven elephants from extinction. Today, that desperate conservation effort has blossomed into one of Africa's great success stories—the park now protects over 450 elephants plus an incredible diversity of wildlife.

The journey takes you inland from the lush coastal forests into the drier Eastern Cape bushveld, a landscape of dense thicket vegetation, open grasslands, and valleys that provide perfect elephant habitat.

Arrive at Addo Rest Camp in the early afternoon and check into your accommodation. After settling in and perhaps enjoying lunch, prepare for your first safari experience.

Your tour includes two guided game drives in an open 4x4 vehicle with an expert ranger: one this afternoon to capture the beautiful golden light, and another tomorrow morning at dawn when the bush awakens. These guided safaris offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities—your ranger knows animal behavior, tracks fresh spoor (footprints and signs), and positions the vehicle for optimal sightings and photography.

This afternoon's safari introduces you to Addo's remarkable biodiversity. While elephants are the stars—and you are virtually guaranteed to see family groups with babies, massive bulls, and matriarchs leading their clans—the park harbors much more. Addo protects the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino) plus an array of other species: zebra, various antelope including the rare flightless dung beetle (unique to this ecosystem), warthogs, jackals, and over 400 bird species.

Your ranger will explain elephant social structures, show you how to read animal tracks, identify bird calls, and share the conservation stories that make Addo so special. Watch elephants dust-bathing, youngsters playing, and herds moving to waterholes as the day cools. The late afternoon light bathes the bush in golden tones—perfect for photography and simply marveling at these magnificent creatures in their natural home.

Return to camp as darkness falls, share safari stories over dinner, and rest well for tomorrow's dawn adventure.

Private Reserve Alternative:
Amakhala Private Reserve - Upgrade to one night in an exclusive private reserve with full board (3 meals) and 2 premium safaris with dedicated ranger for close Big Five encounters (approximately €350/person supplement)

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 9 - Dawn Safari & Return to Cape Town

Rise before dawn (around 5:30 AM) for your morning game drive—the highlight for any wildlife enthusiast. The African bush at first light offers something magical: animals are most active, predators may be returning from night hunts, and the soft morning light creates perfect photography conditions.

As you drive through the awakening park, watch elephants heading to water, birds beginning their dawn chorus, and perhaps predators like lions or hyenas spotted before they retreat to shade for the day. Your ranger will track fresh signs—a lion's pugmark in the dust, elephant dung still steaming, alarm calls from baboons indicating a predator nearby. Every moment brings potential discoveries.

The crisp morning air, the anticipation of what might appear around the next bend, the expertise of your guide pointing out details you'd never notice alone—this is safari at its finest. Watch how elephant calves stay close to their mothers, how buffalo form protective circles, how zebras and wildebeest often graze together for mutual protection. Your ranger's knowledge transforms simple sightings into profound understanding of Africa's complex ecosystems.

Return to camp around 8:30 AM for a hearty breakfast, sharing excitement about the morning's sightings with fellow safari-goers. After breakfast and checking out, depart for Port Elizabeth Airport (about 1.5 hours drive).

Check in for your internal flight back to Cape Town (flight ticket available as optional add-on). Upon arrival in Cape Town, transfer to your guesthouse for your final night. The rest of the day is yours to relax, perhaps stroll along the waterfront, or watch the sunset paint Table Mountain in golden hues—a beautiful conclusion to your Garden Route adventure.

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 10 - Departure

After savouring your breakfast, enjoy a free morning for last-minute souvenir shopping or a final stroll through Cape Town's streets. Perhaps visit the V&A Waterfront, browse craft markets for handmade treasures, or simply soak in the atmosphere of the Mother City. Depending on your international flight time, you will be transferred to Cape Town International Airport, allowing plenty of time for check-in and departure formalities. As you leave, you carry with you memories of the Rainbow Nation.

Meals: Breakfast included

Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes! The Garden Route is one of South Africa's most family-friendly destinations. The variety of activities—penguins, ostriches, elephants, boat cruises, forest walks—keeps children engaged. Many travelers extend their stay—common additions include extra days in Cape Town for winelands visits, more time in Knysna or along the coast, additional safaris at Addo or nearby private reserves, or visiting other Garden Route towns like Plettenberg Bay or Hermanus for whale watching. Some prefer to add a Cape Town to Johannesburg component, visiting the Kruger area for more extensive Big Five safaris.
